Chapter 4 – The Initiating, Educational, and Legendary Kachinas
Initiate and educate the young on how to live as a Hopi takes place in the ceremony. Kachinas teach the necessary living skills and knowledge they need to develop in an orderly, sequential way into Pueblo society.
Crow Mother Kachina is the mother of all and would initiate children during the ceremony.
Antelope/Deer Kachina brings rain and increases the animal’s numbers. Animal kachinas act as instructors to train the warriors on how to avoid danger. Sometimes they demonstrate how to use herbs to cure sickness as doctors.
The Great Horned Owl Kachina wears a mental and woven belt. This Kachina is a warrior and in charge of disciplining with the one who have inappropriate behaviour.
Paralyzed Kachina and blind Mudhead could not catch up with the other villagers while moving to another place. The crippled Paralyzed climbed onto the back of the blind Mudhead and navigated him to hunt with his bow and arrows. Together, they survived by cooperating despite their individual weaknesses. The Hopi educate the children on overcoming the difficulty by joining forces, imitating kachinas in honour of these two legends.
