Story Behind: “There was no doubt in Ugo Gattoni’s mind what the theme for his first Hermès scarf would be. At the centre of his megapolis stands none other than a gigantic monument dedicated to the horse. This design, each tiny part of which holds a surprise in store, perfectly reflects his aesthetic universe: a phantasmagoric world where the eye wanders freely, pausing at each sketch, each architectural fragment. With a surrealist spirit and a healthy dose of humour, Ugo Gattoni carries us away into labyrinths reminiscent of a mischievous Escher.”

Story Behind: “Pink flamingos, those huge, strangely beautiful birds, throw themselves once a year into a lengthy nuptial parade that sees them pair off, two by two… until next year. Flaunting their long, extraordinarily supple, graceful necks, their aristocratic bearing, their carefully preened wings, males and females take stock, brushing past one another, scrutinising their potential partners for hours on end. Surrounded by palms, orange trees, and tropical flowers, their wings unfurled, in a frenzied tête-à-tête, the two birds pictured here are a celebration of their native Florida. America’s south-easternmost State is home to the celebrated Everglades National Park, the habitat for a host of species, including alligators, cougars, lynx, manatees, and flamingos.”

Story Behind: “La Maison des Carrés”. Pierre Marie, the artist who transformed the carré-making adventure into a miniature architectural model combining the Hermès Lyon silk atelier with the Hermès store, 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris France. The 2015 Hermès booklet has the following narrative: “In a joyful burst of colour, La Maison des Carrés tells the story of an adventure: how a silk scarf is made from the initial inspiration, through the dyeing and printing processes, to its arrival in store. Also to be spotted here is the cabinet of curiosities museum, the design studio – an incubator for talent that has inspired so many designs – and a whole host of people from this epic. Then there is the nerve centres: the final destinations of the legendary scarves destined to grace the necks, shoulders, waists or heads of their new owners!”

Story Behind: L’Arbe du vent is a tribute to the Huichol people of Mexico’s western Siera Madre – also known as the Wixáritari – and their polytheistic religion, worshipping the divinity inherent in every aspect of the natural world. At its centre, the scarf depicts the eye of God, the protector, surrounded by the four elements, marking the four corners of the Huichol world: Mother Water, the origin of life, Tatei Haramara; Earth, the soul of the world, Tatei Yurianaka, with two hummingbirds fluttering above, symbolizing the souls of traditional shamans; Grandfather Fire, Tatehuari, and Air, Kieiri, the Wind Tree. Mexican artist Montserrat Gonzalez-Lugo has taken inspiration from traditional bead embroideries and threaded wool pictures to depict the essence of Huichol spirituality.

Story Behind:  “Produced in association with the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, this scarf is inspired by the cloisonné enamel designs of China’s Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties, many of which are preserved in the museum’s archives. Nineteenth-century France showed a pronounced taste for Chinese art, and many important private collections were amassed during this period… The enamel technique known as cloisonné creates motifs outlined by tiny strips of metal forming raised networks covering the decorative surface, to be filled with enamel. Here are floral and geometric motifs, and a galloping horse, that most symbolic animal in the Chinese bestiary, often associated with dragons. This refined, sophisticated composition is a fitting tribute to the extraordinary subtlety of cloisonné work.”

Story behind: “Annie Faivre collection invites us to walk in paradise. An evocation of Eden, this abundant composition is inspired by the tapestries named vegetable greens in vogue from the late Middle Ages. The garden’s art, which is believed born in Mesopotamia, is dedicated to man’s pleasure. This order of nature folded into his aesthetic choices. Legendary gardens thrive here as an invitation to linger. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. A medieval maze in topiary art of plant height. The gardens of Alhambra in Granada are marvels of Islamic art. The Mughal Garden Taj-Mahal. The gardens of Villa Borghese in Rome are refreshed by multiple fountains or the Majorelle in Marrakech. Painter, and collector of plants, it did meet at a place of shadows and light, the species of the world, discovered in his travels. Wonderful mixed!”
