Hermès Scarf Into The Canadian Wild

Year of Issue: 2017

In-depth Research Article by CloudWei Cheung

The scarf design story from Hermès: “Canada is the second biggest country in the world by geographical area. Bounded by three oceans, this vast territory is watered by thousands of lakes. Its diverse fauna is protected in a host of regional and national parks, burgeoning with wildlife. This vivid evocation by Alice Shirley presents a swirling celebration of life, an explosion of colour. A majestic snowy owl, one of the symbols of the Québec region, soars amid the aurora borealis. Animals go about their daily lives by land and sea: polar and brown bears, salmon, narwhals, orcas and whales, stags, bison, bighorn sheep, caribou, snow geese, Canada geese, butterflies and owls are depicted in their natural habitats, among rushes, at the foot of a great sequoia, in the shade of a maple tree, surrounded by blue flax flowers, in the clear waters of a river… This carré is an ode to the natural world, a celebration of its inestimable value, and a testimony to the treasures of the Canadian wild.”

Hermès Scarf Au Coeur de la Vie

The scarf design story from Hermès: “Life is an extraordinary series of metamorphoses. Like an allegory of life itself, this scarf takes us on an incredible journey, beginning at the heart of a single living cell, and ending among the branches at the tops of the very tallest trees in the equatorial rain forest. From the infinitely tiny to the infinitely great… The forest canopy is an expanse of greenery reaching into the empty sky – all that lies between it and the sun. Remote and inaccessible, it is beyond the reach of man: this is the realm of the imagination of Nature herself. The incredible, rich tapestry of fauna and flora is protected by its great height. The fabulous, living treasure house holds innumerable undiscovered secrets. The heaving swell of dense, luxuriant vegetation is the setting for innumerable encounters and adventures. Chameleons, monkeys, parrots, hummingbirds and tiny lemurs busy themselves amid orchid flowers and flesh-eating plants, leaping or flying from vine to vine. Energy is the heart of life.”

Hermès Scarf Equateur

Year of Issue: 1988

Artist: Robert Dallet

Jewellery Artist: CloudWei Cheung

The equatorial zone of South America has remarkably diverse fauna and flora that is a marvelous source of inspiration for the passionate naturalist Robert Dallet. Around a jaguar, the solitary big cat that prowls dense forests, a whole population of wild animals busies itself. The ocelot and the margay – small felines, sharp and keen – dominate the scene and frame a spider monkey, a sloth and toucans. Then comes the ballet of the macaws, parakeets and a cock-of-the-rock, followed by the white-headed capuchin, the woolly monkey and the ringtail. On the ground rest roseate spoonbills, a sunbittern with its wings spread, a scarlet ibis… A composition of multiple voices.

Hermès Scarf Les Artisans d’Hermès

Year of Issue: 2020

Artist: Akira Yamaguchi

Jewellery Artist: CloudWei Cheung

In-depth Research Article by CloudWei Cheung

The Scarf design story from Hermès: Akira Yamaguchi is an artist from Tokyo who is inspired by traditional pictorial forms, which he interprets in a personal and innovative way. Invited to France by Pierre-Alexis Dumas, he discovered the different facets of Hermès. This composition is a meeting of Japanese culture and Lyon silk know-how and pays tribute to the artisans. The centre of the design is two samurai: a woman riding a horse motorcycle and a man holding its reins. This modern chimaera is surrounded by scenes depicting the Faubourg Saint-Honoré store in Paris and the silk, leather, and saddlery workshops.

Hermès Scarf De la Mer au Ciel

Year of Issue: 2014

Artist: Toutsy (Laurence Bourthoumieux)

Jewellery Artist: CloudWei Cheung

The Scarf design story from Hermès: “Fish, like sea-butterflies, metamorphose to greet the sky.’ With these words, Laurence Bourthoumieux describes her teeming, rippling composition of harmonious curves, their meandering forms evoking the ocean depths, and skies full of birds and butterflies. The design is – quite literally – a picture of metamorphosis in action, a vision of a world floating and flying free of gravity itself; a fluid, dreamlike world where shapes, colours and light are transformed from one moment to the next. Centuries ago, the sky was sometimes thought to be composed of the same elements as the sea. And in ancient Greece, fish were among the attributes of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, born – like this silken bestiary – of the ocean spray.”
